Why not a text file?

A ticket site sells 2,000 seats in one minute while 500 people click Buy at the same moment. Could it keep its sales in a text file? Picture two people who open that file at the same time, each add a sale and save: whoever saves last wipes out the other's sale.

A database is a program whose whole job is guarding data. It lets many people read and write at once without losing anything, finds one record among millions fast, and enforces rules, so a price can never be the word banana.
