Memory boxes

New idea

8 billion boxes, found instantly

A laptop with 8 GB of memory holds about 8 billion bytes. Picture 8 billion tiny boxes in one very long row.

Yet when a program asks for one byte, the computer gets it in less than a millionth of a second. It never searches. How?

Every box has a number on it, called its address. Like house numbers on a street, the computer goes straight to the box it wants.
